Bulk SMS that gets read: six habits that separate signal from spam

Delivery is not the goal. Being read, understood and acted on is the goal — and that is a writing problem more than a technical one.

A message that arrives and is ignored has cost you the same as one that was never sent.

Use a sender ID people recognise. A name beats a shortcode, and a shortcode beats an unknown number.

Say the most important thing first. The preview on a locked screen is roughly forty characters. If the point arrives after that, most recipients never reach it.

Send one idea per message. Two requests in one SMS reliably produce one response.

Mind the timing. Messages sent between 8am and 6pm get read; messages sent at 11pm get resented.

Make the action obvious and small. A short link, a number to reply with, or a single word. Anything requiring a laptop will wait, and waiting means forgotten.

Read your delivery reports. Numbers that fail repeatedly are dead weight in your contact list, and cleaning them is the cheapest improvement available to you.
